Taxable Stock Spinoff Example:
On 1/1/1995 you bought 100 shares of AT&T for $10.00. On 1/1/98 there is a spin-off of Lucent Technologies and 85% of the original basis of AT&T is retained and the other 15% is used to purchase your shares of Lucent. You now get 1/2 share for every share of AT&T you own. The following two transactions should be entered:
- A "Return of Capital" transaction on 1/1/1998 for AT&T for $150 (15% of your total cost basis).
- A "Buy" transaction on 1/1/1998 of 50 shares of Lucent Technologies (because you get 1/2 share of Lucent for every share of AT&T) at $3 per share, which equals the $150 value that the AT&T cost basis was reduced by.
Non-Taxable Stock Spinoff Information:
Your holding period should match the purchase dates of the original buys. Adjusting the Number of Contracts of a Stock Option for an Account:
- Determine the appropriate number of contracts that are missing or should not be in the account.
- Create an Investment Transaction in the appropriate account.
- Use "Shares In" for the Transaction Type if there are contracts missing from the account. Use "Shares Out" for the Transaction Type if there are contracts that should not be in the account.
- Select "Option" for the "Security Type".
