Which File Type Should I Choose for Importing?
SEE Finance makes importing your data quick and easy. Knowing what kind of files to import
may not be so easy. SEE Finance can import QIF, OFX, QFX, and CSV files, but each option has its
own strengths and weaknesses.
QIF Files
QIF files are great for importing data from other software as they can include all relevant account and transaction
information as well as category lists. The known weaknesses are that QIF files do not have a specified date format, do not distinguish between transactions (no unique IDs),
their transaction number or check number, and a lot of the times does not distinguish between investment security types (stock, mutual fund, bond, option, etc.?).
Note: Sometimes QIF files are listed at financial institutions as "Microsoft® Money 2002 or Earlier" or "Quicken® 2002 or Earlier".
OFX & QFX Files
OFX & QFX are the newest and most detailed of the financial file formats. These are the preferred file types for importing account data
straight from a financial institution. OFX is actually the file format used in Direct Connect downloads. Quicken® has their own version
of OFX, which is the QFX file format. OFX and QFX files have a higher level of specifications than the QIF file format and contain unique IDs for transactions and can better handle more complex transactions such as investments. The only weakness is that OFX and QFX files do not contain category or split transaction information
as they are usually only created by financial institutions.
Note: Sometimes OFX files are listed at financial institutions as "Microsoft® Money 2003 or Later" and sometimes QFX files
are listed as "Quicken® Web Connect 2003 or Later".
CSV Files
CSV files are files easily created by users, downloaded from financial institutions, or created from other software. CSV importing in
SEE Finance is limited to just a few options for importing security information and currently can only import information
for stocks and mutual funds.
CSV
***Note: SEE Finance can also import category lists found in QIF files.
If your category list is included in the same file as account data, you can import these categories while
importing accounts
OR this can be done at any time by
importing categories from QIF files.***
